Escaping Your Comfort Zone

Posted on

If you’re thinking about trying a new thing or doing something different and you choose not to because you’re nervous or you’re afraid of change, you are trapped in the comfort zone and you need get out.

The comfort zone can stop many people from progressing in life and in their careers due to fearing the new and trying to cling on to what feels safe.

I myself have been a victim of constantly remaining in the comfort zone and in some aspects I still am. To get out of my comfort zone, I’ve been doing things I wouldn’t normally do without a second thought. For example, I decided to move to Harbor Springs for an internship so I could be somewhere unfamiliar and to also meet new people. Being in a new town always scared me a little but I’m starting to like the uncertainty of being in a new place where you don’t know anyone.

That’s what you have to do to get out of your comfort zone; You have to go against the norm and get to the point where you like that nervous feeling you get when trying something new. If you can do that consistently, your comfort zone will be a thing of the past.

Steps to Success (Part 1): Patience

I will be starting a blog series entitled “Steps to Success” where I describe what you need to do to be successful in your career and your life. I won’t neccessarily be adding a post to the series every week, but they will come sooner rather than later.

Patience is an attribute that a lot of people could stand to have, especially the people in my generation. If you talk to people my age, you will hear a lot of “I’m gonna be making six figures”, “I’m gonna be a CEO in no time” or “I’m only going to be at this job for about a year.” This sentiment is echoed in this LinkedIn article. There’s nothing wrong with being focused on your future, but you rarely hear them say “I’m want to hone my skills at this position ” or “I’m going to stick with this job for a few years.”

Many young employees today want to move up in their respective companies within six months without mastering the position they currently hold. They expect to be at the top of their fields in 5-7 years, and that just isn’t a pratical mindset to have. Sometimes it’s important to understand that whether it has to do with your career or your personal life, you would be better off staying where you are.

I personally don’t expect to be successful overnight and to be honest,  I wouldn’t want to be. Being successful is going to be great but half of what’s great about me having success is knowing all the things I’ve done in life to finally get me there.
